My Journey: Balancing Career Paths in a Dual-Income Family

Are you concerned that you’ll have to give up your career in order to start a family? Or are you playing second fiddle to your spouse’s career? Would you like to discover how to have a harmonious marriage in a two career household?

If so, read on…….

My Husband, Raul, and I in Colorado last summer

Hi! I’m Carol. My husband, Raul, and I have been married for 25 years now and, I’m not ashamed to admit that, we have a very harmonious marriage as a two career household.

We both grew up and met in Arizona and, we worked for the same company for many years. But I have a confession to make, my husband is a few years younger than I am so when we started our life together, I was the bread winner in the family. I really loved my job and career, and the fact that I was an independent single woman, making my own way in life.  I owned a home, had savings in the bank, spent what I wanted to, and life was pretty darn good.

As time went by, Raul’s career started gaining traction and opportunities started becoming available for him too. I knew there would be a time when we would have to have the difficult discussion about whose career would take precedence, specifically if a relocation was involved. I wasn’t ready to give up my career, but I didn’t want to hold him back either.

Well, life made that decision for me! A short time later, after I gave birth to my son, I suffered a massive stroke which ultimately changed everything in an instant. It was during my recovery that I realized I might not be able to return to my executive level position. What would I do?

I did return to work for a couple of years but came to the realization that I was not performing at the same level, as prior to the stroke, and felt I needed to leave the job.

Shortly after I left, I earned my real estate license, joined a brokerage, and enjoyed representing clients in their home sales and purchases for several years. I was able to build my business on referrals from my previous employment, and I could work at my own pace and set my own schedule. I was thrilled to have discovered a new career so quickly.

It was about two years later when Raul was offered a very nice promotion, which included a relocation to southern California.

Once we moved, I returned to school to earn my real estate license in CA and started over again in a new brokerage.  I didn’t care for the business for a variety of reasons, as much as I had in AZ, so eventually left the industry and started with an MLM business. I loved the comradery, team atmosphere, and entrepreneurial aspects of the business but, hating chasing family and friends for sales and distributors. And I didn’t like having to participate in the home parties. Needless to say, that was a short-lived career!

At about the same time all that transition was happening, my husband was offered a wonderful opportunity with a new company, again, with a relocation, to Michigan. We were excited to leave California, due to the high cost of living, and Raul’s 2-hour commute in heavy traffic every day, and at the time thought living in an area with four seasons and snow would be fun. And it was fun for a while.

I decided not to pursue real estate there because I didn’t want to go back to school to earn another license and start over again. And I was unsure how long we would be there.  So, I took a part-time commission job in retail for a bit.

It was about this time I decided to start looking at online opportunities to see what I could pursue that wouldn’t be affected if, and when, we relocated again. I found an educational platform that could show me how to build my own website. I joined and quit within the same month. There was no  coaching or support for someone with just a few tech skills, like me.

So after a few more moves and starting over again and again, I got serious about looking for online opportunities.

I came across yet another education platform that promised to teach you online marketing skills and so much more.  I was pretty skeptical at first, but after doing more research found them to be very credible. They are partnered with Linkedin and are very highly thought of in the online education arena. They offer a variety of coaching programs, have a wonderful member community, and have experienced entrepreneurs leading the company. It all sounded very intriguing.  I Well, this time I jumped in and stayed. And they delivered!

A year ago, I would have never imagined all I could learn from this incredible company. The community of like-minded entrepreneurs are like a second family to me. The training available is unmatched and, the leaders are some of the best in this arena.

This program taught me skills I didn’t know I would ever need or want, and I have now built two online businesses around my passions that are set up to earn income 24/7 globally. I can’t adequately describe the feeling of waking up to see the sales made while I was asleep! Beyond exhilarating!

And even more exciting are the ideas that run through my head every day for so many additional income streams to implement. All around things that I am passionate about. It truly doesn’t feel like work to me.

But I won’t lie to you.  It was hard sometimes, and took time and effort on my part, to learn the skills and build these businesses but, now they run on autopilot, with a few tweaks here and there, and it is so worth it all.    You know what they say, “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it!”

The best part is I can build and work on these business wherever we are. I no longer need to be concerned about relocating, having to go back to school, or starting over if we do move, which I hope we never do, as I am now living my dream life.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved being a mom to my two kiddos, but felt a strong need to feel productive with work too. I knew I would never be happy if I didn’t pursue this opportunity. And I’m so glad I did.

When we landed in Texas in 2012, we bought a 12 acre parcel of land and recently built the home we plan to retire in. I was able to get a couple of horses and now trail ride and train on my horses most days. Something I always dreamt about growing up!

Will you ever truly be happy if nothing changes today? Maybe your family doesn’t need extra income, and that’s okay, but will you be fulfilled? If you do need to work for the extra income, wouldn’t you like to do that work on your own schedule from wherever you want to be? Maybe at home, or at the local coffee shop, or out on your swinging hammock?

So if you want to still have a career and a family, consider learning new skills that you can take with you wherever you go. Design your own future. Create your own destiny.  Click the link below to learn more.

This article will highlight three of the easiest online opportunities to start your online journey. It will cover Affiliate Marketing, E commerce, and coaching, what each is, how they work, the industries reviews, and the best way to get started.

I, myself, started in affiliate marketing first, setting up my first online business as a marketer, then went to ecommerce to learn about selling on Amazon, Etsy, and Shopify just to name a few. I also learned about Print on Demand, drop-shipping, and Private label products.  I have yet to investigate the coaching aspect of online opportunities but know many entrepreneurs in the community that started their own coaching programs and are doing very well.

Let’s start with Affiliate Marketing

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Currently, a $14.3 billion business and expected to surpass $15.7 billion in 2024, affiliate marketing has revolutionized the way companies promote their products and individuals generate income. Some of the best-known companies in the world have affiliate programs ie: Amazon, Walmart, Apple, eBay, and Target just to name a few.

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing strategy where individuals (affiliates) promote products or services of a company (merchant) and earn a commission for each successful referral or sale they generate. It operates on a simple principle: affiliates drive traffic to the merchant's website through unique tracking links or codes. When a visitor makes a purchase or completes a desired action, the affiliate receives a predetermined commission. You can be an affiliate for any number of products and/or companies.

How it Works:

The affiliate marketing process involves several key players: the merchant, the affiliate, the consumer, and the affiliate network or platform. The steps are as follows:

  • Affiliate Selection:Affiliates choose a niche or industry they are passionate about or interested in and join affiliate programs relevant to their chosen niche.
  • Promotion:Affiliates create compelling content, such as blog posts, reviews, social media posts, or videos to promote the merchant's products or services.
  • Tracking and Attribution:Affiliates unique tracking links or codes provided by the affiliate network to ensure proper tracking of referrals and conversions.
  • Consumer Engagement:Visitors click on the affiliate's referral link, which redirects them to the merchant's website. The affiliate's role is to engage and persuade the consumer to make a purchase or perform a specific action.
  • Conversion and Commission:When a consumer completes the desired action, such as making a purchase, the affiliate earns a commission based on the agreed-upon terms.

Pros and Cons of the Affiliate Marketing Industry:

  • Passive Income: Affiliates can earn income on autopilot, globally, as their content continues to generate revenue. There is no cap on your earning potential.
  • Flexibility and Independence:Affiliates can work from anywhere, at any time, and choose their own marketing strategies. (Must have internet access.)
  • Low Start-up Costs:It requires minimal initial investment, making it accessible to individuals with limited resources.
  • Diverse Revenue Streams:Affiliates can promote multiple products or services across various niches, expanding their earning potential.

  • High Competition:The industry is highly saturated, making it challenging to stand out amidst the competition.
  • Requires self-motivation. No one is standing over you to keep you motivated to work.
  • Reliance on Merchant Performance:Affiliates' success depends on the merchant's product quality, customer support, and overall conversion rate.
  • Constant Learning and Adaptation:The affiliate marketing landscape is dynamic, requiring affiliates to stay updated with the latest trends, strategies, and tools.

Types of Affiliate Programs:

  1. Pay-Per-Sale (PPS):Affiliates earn a commission for each sale they generate for the merchant.
  2. Pay-Per-Lead (PPL):Affiliates earn a commission for each qualified lead they refer to the merchant.
  3. Pay-Per-Click (PPC):Affiliates earn a commission for each click generated on their affiliate links, regardless of whether a sale occurs.
  4. Pay-Per-Call (PPC):Affiliates earn a commission for each phone call generated through their promotional efforts.

One key element to Affiliate Marketing programs is to find high ticket and low ticket affiliate products to promote, as it will help sustain your business long term.

How to Find the Best Affiliate Programs:

Next we're on to E-Commerce

E-commerce: Launching Your Online Store

For anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit, E-commerce can be a rewarding path. Online marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, or Etsy have made it easier than ever to set up an online store and start selling products. From handmade crafts and vintage collectibles to digital products and print-on-demand merchandise, entrepreneurs can turn their hobbies into profitable ventures.
E-commerce, short for electronic commerce, refers to the buying and selling of goods and services over the internet. It involves online transactions and the transfer of money and data to execute these transactions. E-commerce has revolutionized the way businesses operate, enabling them to reach a global audience and conduct transactions with ease.

How E-commerce Works:

  1. Online Storefront:The first step in e-commerce is creating an online storefront or website where customers can browse products or services.
  2. Product Catalog:Sellers upload their products or services to the online store, providing relevant information, images, and pricing.
  3. Shopping Cart: Customers add desired items to their virtual shopping cart while browsing. The shopping cart accumulates the chosen products.
  4. Checkout:Once customers are ready to make a purchase, they proceed to the checkout process. Here, they review their order, provide shipping and payment information, and finalize the transaction.
  5. Payment Processing:The online store securely processes the payment using various payment gateways, such as credit card processors, PayPal, or other online payment methods.
  6. Order Fulfillment:After successful payment, the seller prepares the order for shipping or provides access to digital products or services.
  7. Delivery:Physical products are shipped to the customer's provided address, while digital products or services are made available for download or online access. This step can now be done by third party purveyors, for a fee, saving you time.
  8. Customer Support:E-commerce businesses often provide customer support to address inquiries, issues, or returns.

E-commerce continues to evolve and now offers the opportunity to have your products shipped to the distributor directly and letting them handle the general operations for a small fee, leaving you with less stress and more free time. Furthermore, owning an e-commerce store allows entrepreneurs to have full control over their business, enabling them to work at their own pace and manage their time efficiently. Many E-commerce platforms offer comprehensive training courses and resources, ensuring that  entrepreneurs can learn the ropes and succeed in this digital landscape.

Pros and Cons:

E-commerce, or electronic commerce, refers to the buying and selling of goods and services over the internet. Like any business model, it comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages:

Global Reach: E-commerce enables businesses to reach customers beyond geographical boundaries, allowing them to tap into a global market.

Convenience: Customers can shop anytime, anywhere, without being constrained by store hours or location. This convenience factor often leads to increased sales.

Lower Overheads: E-commerce businesses typically have lower operating costs compared to traditional brick-and-mortar stores. There's no need for physical storefronts, which means lower rent, utilities, and staffing expenses.

Access to Data: E-commerce platforms provide valuable data insights into customer behavior, preferences, and buying patterns. This data can be leveraged for targeted marketing campaigns and product improvements.

Scalability: E-commerce businesses can easily scale up their operations without the constraints of physical infrastructure. They can handle increased demand by upgrading server capacity and logistics systems.

24/7 Availability: Online stores are always open, allowing customers to make purchases at any time, which can lead to increased sales and revenue.

Security Concerns: E-commerce transactions involve sensitive customer information such as credit card details, which makes them susceptible to hacking and fraud. Ensuring robust security measures is essential but can be costly and complex.

Lack of Personal Interaction: Unlike traditional retail experiences, E-commerce lacks face-to-face interaction, which can lead to a less personalized shopping experience. This may result in lower customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Logistics Challenges: Fulfillment and shipping logistics can be complex and costly, especially for businesses handling a large volume of orders. Delays, damaged goods, and high shipping costs can impact customer satisfaction.

Digital Divide: Not everyone has equal access to the internet or digital devices, which can limit the potential customer base for E-commerce businesses, particularly in developing regions or among certain demographic groups.

Competition: The barrier to entry in E-commerce is relatively low, leading to fierce competition. Businesses must differentiate themselves through unique value propositions, branding, and customer service to stand out.

Return and Refund Issues: Handling returns and refunds in E-commerce can be more challenging compared to physical stores. Dealing with product returns, restocking, and refund processing can eat into profits and require efficient management systems.

Overall, while E-commerce offers significant advantages in terms of global reach, convenience, and scalability, businesses must also navigate challenges related to security, logistics, and competition to succeed in the online marketplace
